1. Set Boundaries with Kindness

Protect your energy by saying no where needed—whether to extra shifts, emotional labour, or social events. Rest is productive. Don’t feel guilty about looking after yourself.

  1. Talk About It – You’re Not Alone

Loneliness is common, especially in our profession. Reach out to a colleague, friend, or peer support group. A simple check-in could make a big difference for both of you.

  1. Create a Daily 10-Minute Calm Ritual

Whether it’s deep breathing, journaling, stretching, or just stepping outside, walking the dog, build in a short moment each day to reset and regulate your nervous system.

  1. Be Honest About Money Stress

You don’t have to keep up with unrealistic gift-giving or holiday spending. Be open with loved ones or colleagues if things are tight. A thoughtful message can mean more than a present.

  1. Limit Doomscrolling & Vet Forums After Hours

Take a break from social media and online discussions that leave you drained (Yes, you know the ones). Choose uplifting content, music, or podcasts that restore your hope and humour.

  1. Create Your Version of the Holidays

Don’t feel pressured to celebrate the “perfect” Christmas. Honour what feels good to you—even if that’s a quiet day, a walk with your dog, Boxing day swim or saying no to tradition.

  1. Nourish Yourself Without Guilt

Eat to feel good, not to feel bad. Ditch food guilt and opt for meals that feel comforting and energising—plus, drink water, especially during long shifts. Don’t go hungry when you are working over this period.

  1. Share the Load at Work

If you’re working over the holidays, communicate with your team. Share duties, rotate breaks, and look out for signs of fatigue or stress in each other.

  1. Reflect, Don’t Just Rush Ahead

Take a moment to look back on the year. Celebrate your resilience. Maybe write down 3 things you’re proud of, even if it’s just surviving a tough season.

  1. Use the Tools Available to You

If you’re struggling, please check out the free triage tools at Vets in Mind. Access your work place support and other charities.  They can guide you through what you’re feeling and signpost you to the right support.
